Newsworthy First Graders! Seeking Scholastic Magazine
Funded Aug 29, 2013Our class was so excited when the first set of Scholastic Magazines came in the mail. They were shocked to learn that it was something that they would not have to "turn in" after reading and that they would be able to keep them.
I pass out the magazines once a week and we read through the magazine together. I facilitate questions along the way about that week's content which matches up very well to what we are learning throughout other content areas. After that, students are able to add the magazine to their Daily 5 book boxes to read independently or to a friend and take them home when they are ready.
These readers are highly engaging. Students love the bright pictures and show nice confidence with the level of text. After we have read together, I notice that they are eager to try it on their own. We also enjoy the variety in the comprehension activities on the back. It provides a way to check for understanding after reading.
WE JUST LOVE THEM!”

Wanted: Level Readers for First Graders in Need!!
Funded Jul 28, 2011Thanks to you donors, this year is off to an amazing start! In fact, I blinked and we are already preparing for Thanksgiving activities. WOW. I have a great group of readers this year who love to have their eyes in a book. Your generosity has taken us to the next level.
With the books that you helped provide, each student is able to "shop" for new books weekly in our classroom library. As they become better readers, they move up to a higher level. I have the books that you've provided in a classroom library at the front of the room where my first graders make a B line straight toward them every time that they are allowed to get a new book. It's amazing.
Each day, every student has time set aside to have a quiet reading time in my room. There is also an additional time for them to read their books with a friend. They're using the books that you've funded! Without those resources, this time would not be successful each day. I am so appreciative that you took the time to donate to my project. You'll see by the pictures how excited my kiddos are to have the books that you've given us. Thank for your generosity! We are so happy to have you as a part of our classroom. ”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Curtis
