  • Social/Emotional Library

    Funded Dec 18, 2019

I would like to thank you for helping us establish a wonderful social/emotional library for students at my school. It can be very difficult to help young students process challenging and painful feelings. However, through stories, I have found that children are better able to make more of a connection with characters who are going through similar experiences. Children no longer feel alone in their pain and when they find a connection with a story character, they are are more likely to utilize strategies to manage their pain.

Teachers are also thankful for the additional resources as they can read these books with their entire class. This provides opportunities for children to share their experiences within the classroom and find emotional connections with other peers.

    Thank you so much!!”

    With gratitude,

    Dr. Schneider

  • Helping Children with Asperger Syndrome/High Functioning Autism

    Funded Oct 29, 2004

Thank you so much for your generous donation. There is such a tremendous need to provide help to these students, yet they are often overlooked or not given "quality services." I am so happy that I will now have some research-based materials to work with the children in my school who have asperger syndrome and high functioning autism. There is one child in particular who is struggling so badly in his classroom because he is just now discovering how "different" he is. The other kids may not mean any harm but they don't understand him as much as he doesn't understand the other children. This particular boy's situation breaks my heart since he is so bright but his lack of understanding of his social environment makes him such an easy target for ridicule. He is often reduced to tears. I want to also thank you on behalf of his family who will do anything to prevent their son from having to feel so alienated and disconnected. Working with these children is my passion and you have made it possible for me to use quality materials that are both motivating and effective. Thank you so very much. Ariane ”

    With gratitude,

    Dr. Schneider

Children often need help managing their emotions and navigating difficult situations. A social/emotional library would help me support the students at my elementary school who are struggling emotionally. Books would address how to manage feelings associated with the death of a loved one, divorce, anxiety, sadness, bullying, and acceptance of those who are different. This library would also be open to staff who are unsure how to best support those dealing with difficult feelings and experiences that may be interfering with social relationships and academic performance. Books are an incredible way to reach children who may be feeling alone and confused as they can help them process and cope with complex emotions and connect with characters in similar situations.
