Hands-on, Engaging Literacy Activities That Build Language Skills in English!
Funded Feb 12, 2025I am so deeply grateful for this donation, I can hardly find the words. I work with students who have very mixed literacy levels and it is very challenging to meet all of their needs in one course. But with these materials, I will be able to teach to very specific literacy learning needs in the same classroom, at the same time. Many students really need work not in the form of a worksheet or packet or quiz in order to learn, practice and show what they know.
These specialized language learning materials are essential to supporting the learning of a very specific group of students, some with special needs, but will be fun and helpful to all of my students.
Thank you so very much!

Funded Oct 13, 2024The students love having the maps on the walls. Along with the map of the world, we now have individual maps of all Latin/Spanish speaking countries. I often walk into my room to find students leaning against the maps and talking. They're showing each other where they lived, exactly, and talking about areas they might have traveled to, and common or unique experiences. It is so wonderful to see students from different countries sharing their lives and descriptions of their home countries, states and cities. They also use the maps to think about what they are learning in their history classes, and to check their knowledge of geography.
The students have used the toy microphones quite a bit. They are helpful for students who are very soft speakers, but are also fun for everyone. It makes speaking English less scary with the toy microphones and lightens an otherwise nerve-wracking experience of presenting or reading to the class. We are learning songs as well, and some students really love to use them! Because certain students' laptops were not functioning well with the headphones, the adaptors were a huge help, so that nobody has technical issues and everyone can use the headphones successfully!”

Newcomers Need... to Read, Listen and Hear Themselves Speak English!
Funded Sep 1, 2024Hello! We are so grateful to have had our first project fully funded by such wonderful, generous donors ! Thank you all. The students were so happy to see that we had new, functional headphones, and a new reading corner! I love to come in and see students sitting in the corner and holding a book. They are only allowed to use the reading corner when it is reading time, when they are done with their classwork, or between classes, before and after school, so it is a special place. I have observed that my students do not all feel particularly comfortable in the school library, so I think our little classroom library and reading space is perfect for these new readers of English. For some of them, it is a new concept to have a special reading space, and for others, it is just a nice, safe space to try to read regular non-academic books.
We use the headphones several days per week to do online exercises that involve listening and speaking. These are so important to the learning of any language, and I see the students becoming more comfortable with speaking aloud and hearing themselves speak in English. As a class, everyone is slowly gaining confidence, and this only comes with the daily practice these materials have provided us! One more goal is to get more books! I'd also love some manipulative figures. We are truly excited!”
