Coffee Creations to Empower Students in Rural Alaska

My students have loved learning how to use an espresso machine to make the different coffee drinks that they typically only have when they travel outside of our village. They have mastered how to make a latte, americano, and frappe. They also make frozen hot chocolates and apple cider using the blender.

We have already made enough from our little school store to keep the store running. We are open daily during our last period for teachers to purchase drinks. On Friday we even open it up and allow Junior High and High School students to purchase.

Our coffee shop has also been a good invitation for a new cultural activity for our school and community. We have started having Coffee with Elders on Friday afternoons. Coffee with Elders invites our elders from our community into the school and allows our students to learn from their elder's oral stories as they have generationally.
