Ceramic Materials For HS Art Student Trauma Survivors
Funded Nov 3, 2024Your support of the art studio at Concord HS has been incredibly important to these students. While we waited for the kiln and clay to arrive, a fundraising drive allowed us to begin printmaking activities, creating collographs and making group prints in multiple colors. One of these prints has been selected for the Staten Island Borough Arts festival at Snug Harbor, opening on May 6. This will be a huge moment for the collaborating artists, to see their work,"Beloved", framed and hanging in an art gallery!
The kiln, clay, glazes finally arrived, and students began to work with the clay last week. You will see some photos of the artists at work. Word spread around Concord HS that there was clay in the studio, and students began arriving, "can I have some clay too?" Any and all students were given a small handful of clay to hold, and manipulate. By the end of the day there were wareboards full of vessels and pinch pots and they had been awed to learn that the material they had been holding was not "playdoh" but from the earth, and thousands of years old, full of the energy of the sun, the wind, the turning of the earth, the shining of the stars, the movement of the planets and the passing of time. We thank you.”

Funded Sep 1, 2024Many, many thanks for your support of sketchbooks and drawing pens. These were the art materials that my students saw as they arrived in the art studio on their first day of classes. They were amazed to be told the sketchbooks were theirs to keep, and to draw and write anything they wanted in them. In class they keep notes, make watercolors, collages, drawings, glue in handouts and reflect on the day's activities. Each week, they eagerly reach for their books, looking back at what they have done, adding more, and gradually building up a diary of their days in the studio.
The first assignment in class was to make "zines." This is a small book made by folding or stapling a sheet of paper, that is copied and traded with other classmates. The subject of their first zine was things that make them feel good. You might not be surprised to hear that being in the studio, making art, painting, and drawing were all some of the things that the students wrote about in their zines.
We are all grateful to you for your generosity, kindness, and quick response to the request for support.
