Think Like a Mathematician

Funded Aug 14, 2024

Thank you, Big O Tires and The Gates Foundation for funding my project entitled "Think Like a Mathematician".

The students lit up with smiles when I showed them the attribute blocks in which they sorted the blocks into groups based on descriptive qualities. They created titles on how the blocks were alike or different. The attribute blocks engaged students with hands-on experiences with geometric terms like angles, sides, and names of 2D polygons.

Another material was "sticky hands" . The students loved manipulating the stretchy "sticky hands" to figure metric lengths and we used them to compare lengths for answering word problems.

Next, we will use the attribute blocks for fractions. The students love to hold the blocks in their hands and feel the sides and shapes of the blocks. They love to design and build their own structures and these experiences will prepare them for achievement in geometry and fractions. The experiences with the attribute blocks are not only educational but very fun! From Ms. Smith and Ms. Smith's class "Thank You Very Much!"”

With gratitude,

Ms. Smith
