Enthusiasm for Reading

Funded Jul 10, 2011

I cannot express my gratitude to you in a way that truly reflects the appreciation of all my students, and myself. When my students found out the class set of "Catching Fire" was donated by people who have never met them, they were blown away. Thank you for caring about my students.

I teach students that struggle with reading. Finding a book that holds their attention is very challenging. The Hunger Games series is exciting and challenging for them to read. The students come to class every day asking read, rather than trying to avoid it. I have seen a true transformation in my students since we've been reading "Catching Fire". Many of them are developing a passion for reading right before my eyes. It is so inspiring to me.

Like most schools these days, our school does not have the funding to purchase class sets of the newest novels. I would not be able to expose my students to the joy of reading this exciting series without your help. As soon as we read the last page of the first book, they asked when we could start the second. Again, this is coming from students who began the year claiming they 'hate to read'. A thing like that is music to a reading teacher's ears. One student told me that this is the first book she read where she could "see a movie in her head as we were reading". I thought that was pretty amazing, because visualizing is such a key component to the enjoyment and comprehension that we get from reading.

Thank you, sincerely, for investing in these students' future and giving them the opportunity to become better readers, as well as developing a love for reading, which will follow them throughout their lives! ”

With gratitude,

Mrs. Flood
