Funded Aug 14, 2024My students are loving their brand new beautifully crafted blocks! While not all my students are figured out how build yet, I'm confident with peer or adult modeling they will succeed at building. Currently one of students mostly line up the blocks like a train track while others stack the blocks to knock them down to hear the loud crash. These are the beginning stages of block play. Building is a skill that we will be working on throughout the year.
I chose blocks because block play offers my students the chance to explore scientific and mathematical concepts, such as problem-solving and counting, even though they are not aware that learning is taking place. Block play aids in the development of both gross and fine motor skills as they use their whole bodies to reach up and their little hands to grasp and place the heavy wooden blocks. Playing with blocks fosters other crucial developmental areas, including language acquisition my students try to communicate with peers and adults. Other areas block play has targeted are creativity, imagination, self-confidence, and social and emotional development.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Manuel
