Out With The Old, In With The New

Funded Aug 14, 2024

I'm thrilled to share the incredible impact that our new classroom rug has had on my students and our learning environment. After ten years at the same school in Chelsea, I recently joined a new school within our amazing community, and thanks to your generous support, we started the year with a fresh space that has already made a huge difference. This rug has become more than just a soft spot on the floor; it's the heart of our classroom, where students come together to learn, share, and grow.

From the moment they saw the rug, my students were beaming with excitement (the adults too!). They immediately gravitated toward it, finding their "special spot" and seeing it as a cozy, welcoming place. This rug has given them the flexibility to choose where and how they learn, whether during our morning meetings, collaborative small group activities, or independent reading time. It has fostered a sense of belonging and community, where every voice is heard, and every student feels comfortable and engaged.

One memorable project we recently completed was a narrative writing activity, where students worked on writing and publishing their own stories. Students in my classroom learn best when they are provided with the opportunity for small group instruction and flexible seating options. Some students chose to work at the tables, while other students chose to work on the rug. The rug created a physical and emotional space where students felt confident to be creative, share, listen, and connect with on another about their stories. It's been amazing to see how this simple addition has helped cultivate empathy and collaboration among my students.

Thank to your support, along with the Gates Foundation, my teaching has become more impactful. This rug has allowed us to create a classroom environment that feels like a second home. With such a welcoming space, my students are more focused, more open to making flexible seating choices, and more eager to learn every day.

As we continue through the school year, this rug will remain an essential part of our classroom. It has given us a strong foundation to build our learning community, and I am deeply grateful for your kindness in making this happen.”

With gratitude,

Mrs. Pergola
