Training Fry Chefs for Tomorrow

Funded Jul 12, 2024

Thank you for the gift of the fryers you gave to my foods classes. The class is made up mostly of juniors and seniors who will out on their own soon. The fryers were used in a lesson on knife safety where the students had to cut up potatoes and prepare them for frying. Normally this lesson has been done using PlayDoh, which of course, the students could not eat. By having the fryers, we were able to immediately put their skill into practice, making delicious french fries. Most of the students had never made fries from "scratch" before and none of them had ever used a fryer. I wanted them to see an appliance which made the process easier and much safer to use than frying with hot oil in a skillet. This has been one of their most favorite food labs so far this year.

In my classes I try to introduce my students to equipment/appliances which they may have never tried before. We have used waffle irons, hand mixers, electric skillets, blenders, fondue pots, and other assorted equipment. The addition of these fryers will enable us to try recipes which are now safe to do in a classroom. We will probably do a unit on making carnival foods which are hard to make without a fryer. Your gift has opened up a world of possibilities that my students are excited to explore. Thank you.”

With gratitude,

Dr. Leech
