Finding Community Through Book Clubs

Funded Jul 10, 2024

I never thought I would see the day when some of my previously unengaged football players laughed out loud in a chapter of our book! to actually have them want to continue to the next chapter is a gift. Your generosity made this possible. Before we started reading Final Season, we talked about windows, doors, and mirrors as a metaphor. My biggest worry was that I would catch some of my athletes and lose some of my artists. It has been beautiful to see my students willing to view the world through the eyes of each other.

I have been able to create so many visuals to go along with this book that have allowed even my Spanish-speaking newcomer students to participate with our class. We have learned so many lessons already through this wonderful book. I am so anxious to start reading groups with them when we finish our whole class novel. Using it to guide their independent while they read has been invaluable. Getting buy-in in from those who are normally so resistant to reading has really change the climate in my classroom.

Thank you from my sixth grade students. Thank you from their very grateful teacher.”

With gratitude,

Ms. Taylor
