Calming Corner
Funded Jun 25, 2024The students were introduced to the Calming Corner the first week of school. They were shown and given the chance to use all of the mindful tools available to them. The expectations of how to approach and use the Calming Corner were discussed and posted in the area. All of them were allocated time to utilize the space within that first week, and in addition we began to practice some mindful breathing and stretching techniques.
As a class we talked about reasons they may want to visit the Calming Corner. This was important because there are many ways we can get distracted throughout the day, lose focus, or be unable to give our full attention to a task. We talked about being upset about something going on at home, having a lot of energy in our wiggly bodies, thinking about something that happened on the yard, etc... We developed a silent signal the students can give me (making a "c" with their hand) so they can ask to visit the Calming Corner without interrupting the class.
I am happy to report that the Calming Corner is a success! Students are asking to use is it for appropriate reasons and following the steps independently:
1. Turn over the timer.
2. Choose a mindful activity.
3. Practice being present.
4. Return to the class.
When they return to the class they are more focused and more at ease. They choose to use a variety of the mindful tools, so I appreciate all the donors helping to provide that choice. Some students prefer the bean bags, while others like to relax on the rug. This safe, calming space is benefitting all the students, but especially those that need it most. A thousand times, thank you!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Flaxbeard
