  • Ms. Franciosi Teaches the Water Cycle & Rock/Mineral Identification

    Funded Jun 22, 2024

The water cycle and how Earth's spheres interact with one another are two of our main standards for 5th grade. These students will use the materials that you have provided us with to understand the process of water moving throughout the landscape of our world. I was also able to get 6 rock kits and 6 Mineral kits as well. During this past summer, I was able to attend a really great Science Teacher Workshop and got other great tools that I will be using together with the supplies you provided, so the students can identify different types of rocks and minerals and understand where they are found and how they have been formed.

As we haven't gotten to do this project yet, I have included some pictures of how the project will work. Each group will have a set of rocks and minerals and will use the charts that I received at the Science Workshop to determine what sample goes where. The students love absolutely any chance to do hands on labs. It makes science real to them, in a way that they have never experienced before this year.

I can't tell you again how excited I am to get these projects started in the coming year. My students and the others in fifth grade will all get to benefit from the supplies you have provided us with!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Franciosi

  • Ms. Franciosi's Classroom Science Library

    Funded Jun 26, 2024

Having friends like you all that helped me increase the size of my Science Library in my classroom means the world to me! You all are the best a teacher(girl) could ask for. My kids love these science books, they love the knowledge they get and sometimes just the weird and crazy facts that they get to discover. The set of Science Comics are also a favorite for my students. There was a variety of odds and end books in this project, and I truly can't thank you all enough.

All of the books that I selected deal with the standards that we will cover in 5th grade, so this will be an investment in the lives of future kids in science as well. The solar system, rocks and minerals, the spheres of earth and how they interact, including the water cycle are some of the most important things we will go over this year.

I have already been able to use a few of the books to go over interesting things we have learned, but a large portion will be after Christmas when we begin diving into the spheres of Earth, especially the Biosphere and how plants and animals interact and use each other to survive. I again cannot thank you ladies enough for supporting me in this venture.”

  • Decomposers: Growing Mold & Elephant Toothpaste Experiments

    Funded Jun 17, 2024

We will be utilizing the supplies from this project when we return from Christmas Break. I cannot thank you enough for all your help in funding this experiment.

In the new year, we will be setting up mold experiments, to determine if certain substances inhibit the growth of mold. We will use, salt, sugar, distilled vinegar, hydrogen peroxide solution, lime juice, and 24/Hr Dark as our variables. The students will be able to make a hypothesis as to whether their variable will increase mold production or inhibit it. We will make daily observations for almost 2 weeks, before we draw a conclusion from them. This allows the students to really experience the scientific method and make judgement calls on observations.

Each sample plate will have a slice of bread, apple slice, tomato slice, half sliced grape, and Cheese. As this experiment is planned for after my due date, I am providing some pictures from our experiment from last year for you all to see. The kids loved being able to make observations and have a daily responsibility of getting their group packets and getting their information updated quickly and efficiently (”

  • Ms. Franciosi's Science Class: Circuits and Electricity

    Funded Jun 17, 2024

This unit was focused on all the types of energy that we use in our world. Students got to explore a variety of different types of energy and begin to understand how we use that energy in our everyday life. Electricity and circuits are an important piece of energy and getting to build hands on circuits and see electrical energy flow through the circuit really helps the students engage in their learning. Many of these students have never gotten to utilize lab equipment of any kind and being able to change the components of a circuit makes learning so much more fun.

The Lakeshore Electricity Tub and Electricity Book Bundle were big aids to demonstrate this flow of electricity through the components on a circuit. Each student was able to build a usable circuit, as well as read about how the flow of electricity works. Another big aid was the large rolling whiteboard and individual whiteboards for each student. We used these to diagram our circuits and think and discuss how the components would work based on their location on the circuit. The large whiteboard has also been very helpful for my English class as well, as I do not have a great deal of wall space.

Nonetheless, my students love anything that we can do that is hands-on, so utilizing these resources that you have provided us with has been an added benefit to 5th grade at TCMS this year. I have been able to share the resources with the 2 other 5th grade science teachers as well, so even more students have gotten the opportunity to utilize the resources that you all have provided us.

I can't thank you all enough for your generous donations. My students love all the awesome activities that we have gotten to do this year because of you. Thank you so much!”

  • Ms. F Needs Laboratory Equipment!!

    Funded Jun 23, 2024

We have been hustling to use all the fantastic supplies you have provided us with this year. The 5th grade students in our county come from 3 different elementary schools, across a wide variety of backgrounds. Some students have never seen laboratory equipment and have certainly not gotten a chance to use real laboratory equipment. My students have been so excited to utilize all the new supplies and get a chance to actually learn science hands-on.

All of my students have gotten a chance to use our analytical balance to weigh the mass of Legos while studying matter, as well as use our new glassware during our egg dissolving lab. The Lakeshore 5th grade Standards Kit allowed us to demonstrate some of the basics of Physical science, including differentiating properties of matter and using a double-pan balance to measure mass.

The students have not yet got to use our new microscopes, but they are so very looking forward to it. I was able to get them out and set them up and make sure they each were working properly. We plan to utilize them when we get back from Thanksgiving break and begin our Unit on the Biosphere. I want them to be able to look at all of the fascinating microscope slides that you provided us with and open up their eyes to the world of science that is everywhere around them.

I can't relay enough how excited I was to get this project funded and how appreciative that my students and I all are, to be able to utilize these great science tools at such an early age.”

    With gratitude,
