Learning by Design: Geometric Patterns and Colorful Seating

Funded Aug 15, 2024

Our new geometric rug has truly become the heart of our classroom! We use it daily for phonics and phonemic awareness lessons, where students build essential literacy skills while seated comfortably. It's also our gathering place for morning circle and meetings, where we share thoughts, set goals, play games, and foster a sense of community. During writing time, students love to grab a clipboard and sit on the rug as they craft their stories, and during independent reading, it's their favorite spot to relax and dive into their books. Even during lockdown drills, the rug provides a calming and familiar space, reinforcing its role as a center of safety and connection.

My students were ecstatic when they first saw the rug! Many were nervous about starting second grade with a new teacher, but seeing the bright, welcoming shapes and colors helped put them at ease. It instantly tied everything in our classroom together and gave them a sense of belonging and excitement to learn.

The rug continues to be a central part of our classroom life. As we move forward, it will support our collaborative learning in phonics, math centers, and group discussions. It's where we gather for read-alouds, celebrate milestones, and even have quiet moments to reflect. Whether it's writing, reading, or teamwork, the rug offers a space that brings us closer as a class and helps my students grow academically and socially every day.”

With gratitude,

Ms. Abreu
