  • There's No Contradiction, ENL Loves Fiction!

    My students and I were delighted to receive these fiction books for our classroom! Our ENL curriculum focuses on non-fiction texts that students practice their listening, reading, writing and speaking skills within the content. It also helps them to access academic vocabulary in a more engaging way. However, what we lack in our curriculum, are fiction texts that allow students to transfer these skills. Another reason this is unfortunate is because my students LOVE fiction stories!

    Thanks to your generous donations, my students have non-fiction and fiction texts that they equally love and enjoy. We start each unit with a fiction book. We discuss sequence, character traits, problem, solution, and the lesson of the story. After, we begin working with the non-fiction texts in our curriculum. The fiction texts serve as background knowledge, which ultimately encourages students to engage with the more challenging texts. Furthermore, my students can see more of themselves through these fiction texts! We are forever appreciative of your kindness in helping to develop an academically rigorous and engaging curriculum.”

  • Diverse Books for Diverse Learners: Helping ENL Students Access Content

    Funded May 7, 2024

    Thank you for your generous donations to our ENL classroom! The students have enjoyed exploring the different genres in the topic they are learning. It is an encouraging experience for students to build their prior knowledge before deep diving into a lesson. For example, my second graders loved reading the space books and learning about the planets. It built their confidence when we started to learn about the topic and students had ideas to share.

    Although many students are not ready to read these books, the images captivate their minds. They practice language development by talking about what they see, what they like, and what they think is happening in the book. Overall, students are overjoyed to have these books and we are forever thankful!”
