Books for Reading Lessons

My students are excited about the new books we have received. We are using the books within our daily reading program. We focus on a specific book each week and incorporate various activities developed to enhance each story.

We begin each week by taking a "picture walk" through the pages of the book and making predictions of what we think might happen. We focus on specific vocabulary words with each story. The words are becoming part of their daily vocabulary as we try to use the words at appropriate times in class. Students are also developing an understanding of story elements as we discuss characters, setting, plot, problems, etc. The stories also provide writing and drawing activities each week

Students enjoy learning about new characters and relating to those characters. We discuss the feelings of the characters throughout the stories and talk about times we might have felt that same way. We have great discussion in my classroom with the books.
