Seen, Heard, Represented, and Inspired by Literature

Funded Aug 5, 2024

On behalf of my students and myself, I want to extend a sincere "Thank You" for your generous donations to enhance our library collection.

Teaching in a primarily African American school, I understand the importance of showcasing authors and themes that reflect my students' experiences. It's crucial for them to see themselves in the stories they read, as this connection can ignite a passion for reading.

Engaging teenagers in literature can be challenging amidst the distractions of life and technology. Your support allows us to provide books that resonate with them, fostering a love for reading while enhancing their comprehension and vocabulary skills. Our students participate in the Accelerated Reader program, and these new titles not only help them meet their monthly goals but also spark curiosity to explore more works by prominent African American authors.

We believe that reading will boost their overall comprehension and vocabulary while broadening their minds to think critically and become well-rounded individuals. My students are amazed that so many strangers have come together to support our small school, and they are thrilled to check out the new titles. The section highlighting books written by and featuring characters who look and sound like them has created excitement and a sense of belonging.

Thank you for believing in the power of literature and for investing in the future of our young adults. Your kindness makes a significant difference in their lives.”

With gratitude,

Mrs. Ridenour
