From Eggs to Feathers: Fostering Language Acquisition Through Chicken Hatching!
Funded Jun 9, 2024Thank you for your incredible support for my project, which has given my Multilingual Learners (MLs) an unforgettable hands-on language experience. Receiving the incubator and brooder box opened up a unique, real-world approach to learning English that has had a lasting impact on my students.
From the very first moment we placed the eggs in the incubator, my students were fascinated. They observed eagerly each day, sharing their thoughts and questions. Seeing their excitement and curiosity unfold was truly inspiring. As the eggs began to develop, students practiced describing each stage in English, using new vocabulary and connecting words like "hatching," "shell," and "feather" to what they observed in real time. Watching them discuss, share predictions, and help each other with descriptions showed their growing comfort and skill in using English naturally.
The moment the chicks finally hatched was magical. Students were captivated as they witnessed these little lives beginning, and they immediately jumped into action, taking turns feeding and caring for them. The brooder box became our language practice station, where every care task turned into a new language exercise. They'd call out for feeding times, explain cleaning duties, and work together to ensure each chick was safe and cared for. It was beautiful to see their empathy and teamwork grow along with their language skills.
One standout moment came when a student, who was initially shy, began explaining the feeding routine to a new student. His confidence and excitement to share his knowledge in English was a reminder of just how impactful this project has been. Moments like these truly show how your support has helped my students grow both in language and in confidence.
Thank you for believing in our classroom and for helping provide this hands-on learning opportunity. My students will carry these memories—and the skills they've built—with them for a long time.
With heartfelt thanks,”
With gratitude,
