Building Reading Motivation: Novel Studies
Funded Mar 3, 2024Thank you so much for contributing to my project. I was able to read "Wishtree" with my 4th grade students and "Wish" with my 5th grade students. Every day students were excited to get to read more of their books and would often ask when the next time was going to be when they were going to get to read. Students also completed comprehension and writing activities to go along with the books which allowed students to monitor their understanding. Specifically, students wrote a text-directed analysis comparing how themselves and the main characters were alike. Through this writing assignment, students were taught to find text evidence to include in their writing and how to explain their examples. Students also enjoyed "reading days" where they got to relax by sitting on bean bags/pillows while we read. They also got the opportunity to practice their fluency skills by reading aloud parts of the book. The goal of this project was to encourage students to continue reading into the Summer months. I am confident that my students are more motivated and will continue to practice their reading skills throughout the coming months and into next
school year. Not only has this project motivated my students, but this project has also motivated me to read more novels throughout the year. Thank you again for your generosity!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Rizzo
