I believe that with the right tools, reading and writing can be engaging for every student, no matter their emotional, behavioral, or educational needs. The single most important thing a teacher can do is help children figure out, not IF they can learn, but HOW they learn best and nourish those strengths throughout the school year.
The white board experience I'm proposing will serve several functions while appealing to ALL students.
With a larger whiteboard, my students will be able to see sight words and vocabulary from across the room. They will independently copy words of their choice and illustrate in their interactive notebooks. This type of journaling sparks creativity and all creativity looks different.
Did you know that differentiation is also embedded in a word wall? When students of various needs & levels have the autonomy to physically interact with tangible words, they are able to delve into the type of learning that suits them best. While the child who likes to hop is both hopping and reading...that's when his best learning will occur. The introverted child may prefer to quietly sit and trace the word she methodically chose from the word wall. And the child who demands near-constant attention and doesn't stop moving or shouting? For him, using differentiated word wall may mean acting out the words in an inside voice with a classmate. He's moving, verbal, and reading. It just couldn't possibly get better than that.
With your donation of large white boards, I can provide an even more positive kindergarten experience for each of my students, no matter their needs or abilities.
Please consider helping fund my project so I can put my words into actions as early as the first week of school.
