The impact that this project had on my students was tremendous. To be able to see the butterfly life cycle first hand was exciting and motivating for my special needs students. The resources were put to good use and reached 9 classes in total!
When the students first saw the baby caterpillars they were curious and excited. The look in their eyes watching the caterpillars grow rapidly and then begin and enter the chrysalis stage was amazing. When they finally turned into butterflies their faces were priceless. Feeding the butterflies while we waited for their wings to strengthen gave the students a sense of responsibility and duty. Releasing the butterflies was such a fun culminating activity for this very special project. Our next steps are to explore the ladybugs life cycle.
