Refuel and Regulate
Funded Jan 30, 2024Thank you again so much for the joy and comfort you have helped bring our class. I could not be more thrilled with the positive impact this has had on my classroom in terms of emotional regulation and socialization. Teaching post-pandemic has led to a lot of unanticipated challenges, especially in regards to students managing stress and maintaining focus.
As an instructor for 11th graders, there is the additional responsibility of helping students maintain stamina for standardized testing, many that last several hours and span across multiple days. A huge benefit of the outdoor activities, such as the frisbees and tennis ball games, is providing students with a structured break in the fresh air to help break apart the instruction and administration of exams. Instead of putting their heads down or turning to their personal devices, they have started requesting that we go outside and spend time together! This builds class culture, positive socialization, recreation, and appropriate self advocacy. One student who struggles with chronic absenteeism even talked to me after to tell me that it was so fun and he can focus so much better after, that now he never wants to miss class again.
Providing snacks has also created a wonderful incentive for students to participate in after school and lunch tutoring, which has translated to higher grades and better performance in class. Additionally, the snacks and water bottles have helped me create a more formalized Positive Behavioral Intervention System, which includes (but is not limited to) students trading their personal devices in for a snack at the beginning of class. This helps encourage self-management and realistic goal setting that can result in positive interactions in every class. Ultimately, this project has helped bring some of my more reluctant learners into the forefront of classroom design and instruction, and their learning and class as a whole is better off for it.”
