Building Adapted and Individualized Classroom Communication
Funded Sep 18, 2024I cannot say thank you enough for your generosity. It has allowed me to explore new ways of adapting materials, provided me with new ways to present questions and prompt communication, and most importantly given my students a way to express their voice and choice.
If there is nothing else you take from this letter and if there is nothing else you share with others about this project, I want you to know that your donations gave me the opportunity to provide my students with the educational opportunities that they deserve. People often learn about my students, their needs, and how hard teachers (like myself) work to provide these opportunities and aren't sure how to help. Learning about funding through donors choose was the best thing that has ever happened to me as a special ed teacher. Thank you for making projects possible - I am forever grateful for the projects you made possible.
With the donations you made, I was able to print adapted books in color from our curriculum. I made safer communication boards and schedule pieces with the foam and laminate. I used the buttons to create verbal repetition of common routines and spaces. It seems simple but my students who are nonverbal love pressing the button that says "I need to go to the bathroom", "I'm ready for lunch", "getting my morning work". We practiced introducing ourselves during morning meeting simply by programming the buttons to say their names. Many of my students this year have never had a voice that they can represent or approximate as their own. After these initial experiences, they were so excited to engage with the buttons. They remain motivated to approximate the verbalizations that they hear. I feel so lucky to have experienced my students finding their voice for the first time.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Funded Jan 17, 2024I wish it was easier to put into words how much your funding helped me to provide my students with adapted materials, without having to create them myself. For many teachers, myself included, time is what we need the most of. You gave me time back. I was able to purchase high quality lessons that are aligned with student standards.
My students deserve and benefit greatly from adapted materials, such as those created by Made For Me Literacy on teachers pay teachers. Yet, those are often inaccessible to me as a teacher in NC. Their materials are high quality and that comes at a significant cost. You all eliminated the factor of cost and gave me back time. For that I cannot say thank you enough!!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Kaila
