Sensory Needs for our Autistic Support Room
Funded Dec 5, 2024Your generous contributions have placed my school on a path to having a sought-after sensory room that will allow out students with autism to have a safe area where sensory overload fades and is replaced with a calming, supportive environment. With these additional supports, our students are able to take the extra time to sooth, calm, and re-orient themselves to focus on learning. While this room may support all students who need it, it is especially crucial for the students who are in this kindergarten through second grade Autism Support classroom as better understanding their own sensory and learning needs, improving their abilities to self-regulate, and advocate for these supports will set them up to be lifelong learners in these early ages. The noise-reducing earmuffs as part of this package will enable our students to have a more peaceful atmosphere during whole-school activities leading to increased inclusion, and the chewy necklaces and fidgets allow for a safe, appropriate way for students to engage their senses. Further, use of markers and visual aids will allow our students a modality for self-expression and exploration. Thank you again for your kind, contribution, and our students will be able to use and learn from them this year and in the future.”

Funded May 7, 2024Thank you so much for taking the time to donate to this project. As the new school year ramps up, these materials will continue to be utilized in order to enhance the educational opportunities presented to my students. For example, as new students finished the school year and transitioned into kindergarten or other elementary grades, the dry erase thermal laminating sheets gave opportunities for our students to practice their penmanship skills, learn how to write their names with correct spacing, and sound out various CVC words presented in therapy. The "Guess Who?" game further has provided opportunities for students to practice the turn-taking dynamics of social interactions while formulating yes/no questions by using deduction skills. As the new year begins, I am excited to better incorporate books and literacy skills into activities by using the "Pete the Cat" series to provide students with a fun, functional way to engage in dynamic book reading. The brand new Autistic support classroom will utilize these materials heavily while in speech therapy, and I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to donate and read this letter.”

Funded Dec 26, 2023The resources provided by this initial project have truly benefitted the students who receive speech-language therapy from me in the School District of Philadelphia. I have been able to provide snacks to students who need them, and I have been able to transform my teaching space into a welcoming environment that displays student work, allows for collaboration, and gives a safe area to learn and grow. Students in particular have benefitted so greatly from the fidget tools that have been provided, and they have had a blast using the new supplies to make materials to reinforce their goals. Of particular note, the Jumbo Mighty Mouth Puppet has significantly improved student ability to produce hard-to-see sounds such as /r/. Overall, these have all contributed to a warm, positive learning environment, and I am incredibly thankful for the support this year.”
