MS 136's Very First Bird Watching Club
Funded Oct 21, 2024Thank you so much for supporting the MS 136/Sunset Park Prep birding club aka the Sunset Birders! Your generous donations have purchased us enough binoculars, so that every student who comes to club is able to have their own pair to use. The birding books that your donations provided have helped us grow our identification skills and learn all about the birds we encounter on our walks.
Most of our birding takes place in Greenwood Cemetery, a short walk from our school. With 478 acres to explore and over 400 species of birds seasonally, we are in birding paradise! With the supplies provided by your funding, we have been able to take full advantage of the bird watching in one of our City's best green spaces.
We are extremely grateful for all your help in getting our little club get started. There are over 30 students who come to birding club, and our numbers are growing! We have a waitlist each week! For us, being a part of Sunset Birders is more than developing our practice of bird watching. It is also about learning how to exist in nature, even when living in urban spaces. It is about creating a safe and inclusive community, where everyone can enjoy the outdoors. It is about challenging norms, getting outside, and having fun!
Thank you once again for your support! Yay birds!”

Sensory Corner
Funded Jan 10, 2024Thank you so much for your support in creating our Sensory Corner. My students have been absolutely loving the games, crafts, fidgets and activities that were so graciously provided for us. The students especially love the kinetic sand, clay and play dough. They are able to have tactile experiences, while exploring creative outlets. The fidgets have really helped students with their emotional regulation during stressful moments.
The Sensory Corner has become a favorite for my 6th grade advisory class. Advisory consists of a teacher (me) and a group of students who meet twice a week and stay together through all 3 years of middle school. My group of 6th grader enjoys using the Sensory Corner as an activity on it's own, and as supplemental activities during our group work time. Adjusting to middle school can be stressful for some students, so the Sensory Corner is a place where they can unwind, decompress and engage in creative play. Thank you again for your helping me curate these experiences for my students.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Borrelli
