  • Let's Talk About Math!

    Funded Feb 5, 2013

Just wanted to say thanks again for your support with this project. My students are totally enjoying these games, which are really working to build so much more than their math skills.

We are currently using the games weekly. Over the past few weeks, my students' thinking and talking about math is becoming more natural and fluent. Moreover, their strategic thinking and problem solving skills are being refined. On top of that my students are really working to support one another and develop a true sense of sportsmanship. Given the diverse group of learners that I have in my class, this is critical.

Thanks so much for making math fun for my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Cartagena

  • There's A World Out There!

    Funded Feb 21, 2012

I just wanted to say thanks for you kindness and support. Your generosity had a positive impact on all of my students. These magazines inspired students to read and learn more about the world around them. Students were anxious to read and talk to each other about what they were learning.

Many students are not at the point that they are talking about forming interest groups to do additional research on a variety of topics and a few them are even talking about doing projects that will make a difference in the world just like some of the students they have read about.

Additionally, the amount of vocabulary students have picked up by reading these magazines is more than I had expected.

    Thanks again for your support.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Cartagena

  • Hearing Our Own Voices

    Funded Dec 10, 2011

I cannot thank you all enough for supporting this very special project. The children are going to be thrilled when they hear we got funded. Moreover, the timing of this couldn't be more perfect as we are getting ready to explore making podcasts. The voice recorders will now enable us to get some additional practice in before actually recording.

Once again, your generosity and kindness really touches my heart. To know that there are people out there who care about making a difference in the lives of children that they don't even know warms my heart and inspires me to continue doing the work that I do despite the obstacles and challenges we face when we don't have the tools we need to teach as effectively as we can.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Cartagena

  • Real Book Clubs About Real World Issues!

    Funded May 2, 2011

I cannot thank you enough for supporting this project. These materials enabled my ESL students to interact with their peers in a way that was meaningful and rigorous. Students were all actively involved and so willing to take chances with language. It worked out better than I could have ever imagined. Some of my students spoke more in these book clubs than they had the whole entire year! Moreover, as this project was the last of the year, it kept the students engaged until the very last day. We even had a reading marathon pajama day where students spent hours reading, discussing their books, and re-reading to prove their thinking.

Once again thank you so much for making a difference in the lives of my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Cartagena

  • Capturing My World...

    Funded Dec 11, 2010

I wanted to take a moment and thank you for your generous gift. When I wrote the proposal I knew getting the materials would have an impact on my students, but I had no idea it would be this powerful. My students love the Flip Video Camera and it is making such a difference in my students' learning lives.

Your generous gift has really inspired and empowered my students to be reflective about their learning. We have been using the camera primarily for recording the book club conversations and this simple device has transformed the work they do. After recording these conversations, which students do on their own, they play it back to see what they did well and what they need to work on. They are slowly improving their expressive language and are really working hard to make sure they do all the things that are essential in a book club.

Next week, we are going to be using the camera in a different way. We will be using the camera to record interviews with third graders, which is one small part of a special project we are preparing to do. We would not have been able to grow in our book clubs or document "live" portions of our research when doing projects if it weren't for you.

I am truly thankful for kindness and support. ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Cartagena

  • That's a Great Book!

    Funded Nov 24, 2010

I wanted to take a moment and thank you for your generous gift. When I wrote the proposal I knew getting the materials would have an impact on my students, but I had no idea it would be this big. My students love the books! They are becoming active readers and I could not be more proud of them.

    96 800x600

Your generous gift has really inspired and empowered my students to be part of something bigger. They now know that reading in clubs is not just about themselves, it's about their book club friends as well and because of this they are so willing to read to understand. They are now able to readily generate ideas about what they are reading and bring those ideas to their book club. They are slowly improving their expressive language and are starting to make relevant connections to the world around them based on the issues that have come up in the books.

Also, did I mention - they LOVE Andrew Clements! They go to the school library looking for other books he has written and they state his name in conversations like he is an old friend.

Once again thank you so much for making a difference and investing in the lives of my students by supporting us with our book club books.

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Cartagena

  • There's A World Out There!

    Funded Nov 7, 2010

I cannot thank you enough for your kindness and generosity. These magazines have a brought a new level of excitement and true enthusiasm from my students. They cannot wait to read and discuss the content of the magazines with their book club partners and friends. This means that are anxiously awaiting the next magazine to come in and have made sure that we make time for this to happen in the schedule.

One of the benefits from the magazines that has went over much better than I anticipated was the amount of vocabulary students are holding on to and carrying over to other subject areas. The magazines articles ground everything in what is happening in the real world so they are able to make sense of it in a meaningful way.

Moreover, students have been really curious about what they are learning and want to learn more. One of my students recently told me that she taught her mother about what she learned and her mom was very proud of her. Her story warmed my heart. I know that this was made possible because these magazines are theirs to keep, learn from, and share as they see fit. My students feel empowered and I thank you for that. ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Cartagena

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am totally thrilled and grateful that you decided to support this project that will help make such a big difference in my students' academic lives. Words cannot express how touched I am by your generosity and kindness. I am looking forward to going into school tomorrow and sharing this great news with the kids. I know that they are going to be even more thrilled than I am. Once again thank you, thank you, thank you”

  • There's a World Out There!

    Funded Aug 13, 2008

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Words cannot express how thrilled I was to see that you funded my classroom project. My students are going to be totally thrilled and moreover they are going to be engaged all year long. Having these magazines are going to shape who they are to become in the future. It is going to open a world to them that they have had no experience with. You have made such a difference and I am truly thankful. I cannot wait until the materials arrive and to tell the students that there are individuals in the world, like yourself, who care about the future and who care about their education so much that that took the time to read through our classroom project and support it. Once again thank you so much for helping me to teach "our students" that their is a world out there”

    With gratitude,

  • Math Can Be... Fun and Games

    Funded Dec 2, 2007

I want to thank you so much for your generosity and kindness. My students are going to be thrilled when they find out that someone chose our project to support. This particular project is one that I have been really wishing for because I know that it is going to have a huge impact on how they view math.

Once again thank you so much.

I am teacher in a high needs school in Brooklyn, New York. The students that I teach are full of energy, questions, and potential. About 1/3 of them are English language learners and the biggest challenge I face when teaching them is access to appropriate material. Make a difference in their lives by giving them the gift of knowledge.
