Color Guard: Making Our Band Sparkle!
Funded May 8, 2024The Braxton County High School Marching Eagles could not do the amazing things we do without support from our community and organizations, and we have a huge thank you to put out to a few of them! This year, our color guard doubled in size as our band continues to grow, but color guard is easily the most expensive section of the band. However, we could not put on as successful of a performance without our color guard, seeing as how they are most of our general effect in the show. This year, we were in desperate need of new poles, silks, gloves, rifles, sabers, and other odds and ends that make color guard work. There was no room in our budget for all this new equipment, and for a while, we were at a loss as to how we were going to put the show on the field this year. We constantly looked for secondhand equipment, made some of our own, repainted and sewed our poles and flags, and generally scrimped and saved to make the show happen. But then, at the end of last year, the community came through and saved the day.
Thank you to Donors Choose, an organization that allows donors to find programs in need and help them be successful. Without your platform, we never could have gotten the word out about our needs for the season. It was easy to set up and request the items we needed, and then all we had to do after making our wish list was spread the word on social media and the donations came pouring in. Donors Choose was a valuable resource, without which we could not have started our season.
A huge thank you also goes out to the Maxwell/Hanrahan Foundation, who donated much of the needed equipment. We had a few donations come in, but of course, we don't get anything if everything doesn't get funded, and then Maxwell/Hanrahan Foundation swopped in and saved the day by funding the rest of our list. Maxwell/Hanrahan Foundation, along with the rest of our donors, made sure we were able to start the season with all the equipment we needed. Our entire line of ten color guard members now have new weighted poles, good gloves, new professional-length sabers and rifles, new end caps for the poles, and a good stock of tape to make all the equipment look the same and correct for the show's theme. Not to mention, since we did not have to pay for all this equipment that was donated, we were able to purchase the whole line new uniforms for the show, and a couple different silks that will really make their talent shine.
I as the band director cannot express my gratitude enough. Every year, I stress how to put together a show that looks and sounds amazing and shows off my student's talent. This year, I have not had to worry about how the color guard looks thanks to the generous donations from our community members and the Maxwell/Hanrahan Foundation”

Funded Jun 28, 2024The Braxton County High School Band has long been a vibrant and integral part of our school community, inspiring students, parents, and local residents alike with their dedication and talent. Recently, thanks to the generous support from DonorsChoose, Wing to Wing, and other contributors, we have been able to provide a crucial resource for our band members: raincoats. This generous donation has not only enhanced the band's ability to perform in all weather conditions but has also demonstrated the powerful impact of community support on educational programs.
First and foremost, we extend our deepest gratitude to DonorsChoose, an organization that has revolutionized the way schools secure necessary resources. By providing a platform where educators can present their needs and connect with potential donors, DonorsChoose has bridged the gap between limited budgets and the resources necessary for a high-quality education. The support from DonorsChoose has allowed us to fulfill a critical need—raincoats for our band members. This seemingly simple item is vital for ensuring that our students can continue their performances and practices regardless of weather conditions. Without the support of DonorsChoose, this essential piece of equipment would have remained out of reach, highlighting the profound impact of their contribution.
Wing to Wing deserves our heartfelt thanks for their involvement in this endeavor. Their commitment to supporting educational and extracurricular programs is evident through their generous donation. Wing to Wing's contribution underscores their dedication to fostering the growth and success of young individuals and community-based programs. By supporting our band, Wing to Wing has helped provide our students with the necessary tools to thrive, not only in their musical pursuits but also in their overall development. Their support is a testament to their belief in the importance of arts education and the enrichment it brings to students' lives.
Additionally, we must acknowledge and thank the other contributors who came together to make this project possible. Each donation, no matter the size, played a crucial role in ensuring that our band members were equipped with the raincoats they needed. The collective effort of these generous individuals and organizations reflects a shared commitment to supporting education and extracurricular activities. Their contributions have made a tangible difference, enhancing the experience of our students and reinforcing the value of community involvement in education.
The impact of this donation extends beyond the practical benefits of having raincoats. It fosters a sense of pride and unity among the band members, who now know that their community values their hard work and dedication. The raincoats symbolize not only protection from the elements but also a shield of support from those who believe in their potential. This gesture of support helps boost morale and encourages our students to continue striving for excellence in their musical endeavors.
In conclusion, we are profoundly grateful to DonorsChoose, Wing to Wing, and all other contributors who have supported the Braxton County High School Band. Your generosity has ensured that our band members are well-prepared for any weather, allowing them to perform with confidence and pride. This act of kindness serves as a powerful reminder of the positive impact that community support can have on educational programs. Thank you for your commitment to
our students and for helping us create an environment where they can flourish and succeed.”
