Exploring Renewable Energy Potential
Funded Nov 27, 2023Thank you for providing the funds to obtain two renewable energy kits for my science classes at Reno High School. I teach both physical science and environmental science and these experiment kits will provide demonstration, experimentation, and scaffolded extension opportunities for my students. Additionally, the other environmental science teacher has shown interest in collaborating on activities that she can use in her class as well.
Environmental students were excited about the renewable energy models and have voiced their pleasure at having the apparatus to show some of the alternative energy technologies that we have been studying. These resources make science real for the students and are vital in producing students that can problem solve and think about their own energy use choices/options as they move towards adulthood and a sustainable future. Furthermore, the idea that hydrolysis can provide not just renewable energy, but clean water was a great extension of what was provided in the kits.
Once again, just talking about the technology versus actually using it (in the kits) would not have been as effective in the students understanding of this exciting opportunity. In addition, the working models of the wind turbines were also meaningful and illustrative for students.
Similarly, the physical science students were able to see basic chemical equations modeled and used through innovative technology, which made the chemical bonding and reactions easier to understand. Furthermore, the solar panel can also be used to discuss the flow of electrons for them to understand the basics of electricity.
I appreciate my donors' interest in teaching these technologies and providing the funding for it to happen in my classroom and department.”
With gratitude,
