Nurturing Kindergarten Independence and Organization

Thank you so much for your generous donation of the cubby furniture for my Kindergarten classroom!

Kindergarten classrooms are bursting with hands on materials for children to use to learn through play, discovery and through structured teacher led activities. For children to gain independence and agency and to encourage cooperation in our classroom community, it is important for them to be able to access these materials, to organize and to clean up and return the materials they use in an orderly way.

Before we had the cubbies, the children really could not manage the materials as items were placed often in areas out of reach due to lack of space. When the cubbies arrived, the class was really excited, we worked together to organize the materials on each shelf, sorting by type of material. The children now know where every item belongs, and can independently access the shelving.”
