Celebrations de Nuestras Culturas

Funded Nov 28, 2023

Our goal in the Dual Language Classrooms is to promote respect and inclusivity for the diverse backgrounds, traditions, and customs of our students.

With your generous support our students were excited to enjoy all of our cultural celebrations. Their curiosity and desire for learning grew through the incorporation of bringing the celebrations to life. In December our students were able to learn about different ways we celebrate Christmas and how the traditions are similar and different in Latin American and Caribbean countries. They were absolutely delighted to receive their Christmas baggies and had fun with christmas arts and crafts. As part of our Christmas celebrations we engaged in a whole school Parranda with Christmas music, instruments (maracas, jingle bell bracelets), and singing of traditional songs such as Burrito Sabanero and Feliz Navidad.

In January our students learned about Three Kings Day. Through literacy incorporating the book Three Kings Day - Día de Reyes Mago. Our students also participated in el Museo del Barrio's Three Kings Parade, while wearing their gold crowns.

In February we celebrated el Carnaval, focusing on the Dominican Republic. A Carnaval is a parade with music, dancing, food, and costumes celebrated in many Caribbean and Latin American countries. Our students had an amazing time singing, dancing, wearing their light up rings, and using their whistles. They were excited to learn about the Carnaval while reading the book El carnaval de mi bisabuela (Bisa's Carnaval).

Thank you all so much for contributing to our cultural celebrations. Our students are curious about their own cultures and delighted to learn more about different cultural celebrations. We can't wait to carry on this tradition with new cultural celebrations from different countries.”

With gratitude,

Ms. Yamilex
