  • Literature for My Young English Learners!

    I am so looking forward to completing English/Spanish units for Kindergarten and 1st grade using these books that you donated! I am trying to expose all my students to quality literature, and build my lessons around this literature. They do not always get this exposure in general education classrooms because most schools put students on computers for several hours a week and use a lot of screen time for teaching. Words are taught in lists in isolation, and I am hoping to help my language learners by teaching words in context.”

  • Help My English Learners to Learn Through Quality Literature!

    My 4th grade English Learner class has already started reading Stuart Little. I have 9 students in the group, so it is very helpful to have a full class set. The students love the story, and I have a full set of lesson plans to build vocabulary and practice reading comprehension skills with them.

    I have several grade levels reading the Frog and Toad series, and now I have all 4 books in the series! These books are great for students who need to practice sight words in context, and it is a great introduction to reading books cover-to-cover.

    In today's schools, curriculum that focuses on words in isolation and short reading passages are used in general education. Students are put on computer programs for hours each week. That is why in my EL classes, I build our language learning around quality literature, because that is the true way to make life-long readers.

  • English Learner (EL/ESL) Students Need Quality Literature!

    Thank you so much for this book donation! These were all titles that I already have, but I needed more copies of each title because my student groups are larger now. I had students share the books, but that was difficult for both students sharing to follow along.

    Reading novels has become something many schools and districts have steered away from in favor of computer-based learning paths that focus on reading passages. If students are not asked to read books cover-to-cover at school, many students will never get that experience because they are also not asked to read at home. In my EL program, many of my students are fully bilingual, fluent in English, and stronger in English than Spanish. They have not yet developed enough skills to pass an English proficiency test, and I believe that this may be because they are not reading real books. I have incorporated novel studies into my EL program to help these students. Students learn vocabulary, grammar, and other English skills in the context of the novel studies. Thank you for your donation that helps make this initiative possible. My hope is that by reading novels in EL class, students will get motivated to read on their own initiative.”
