  • Reading for Change & Classroom Materials

    Funded Mar 15, 2025

Thank you for supporting this project and our students. All of the items included in this project will be used to help the students succeed in the classroom. The books included in this project are going to be part of a new SEL Reading program we are working where each Home Room will read 1 book a month that allows for students to discuss topics that relate to their emotional wellbeing. Similarly, it will also be beneficial for our brand new reading program, S.U.R.F. Reading.

All of the other items will be used to help students have access to school supplies and basic staples such as tissues for when they are sick. We are excited for these items and cannot wait to share pictures these items being used.

    Mahalo for your support!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. S

  • Preparing for Project Season

    Funded Aug 14, 2024

Mahalo for your donation. The items included in the project have not only been benefit my students but also myself. The desktop has been of great help as I am able to create and design lesson plans easily. Not to mention, the volume of the desktop has been great for my students when watching videos that tie into their topics.

As the students begin working on their National History Day projects, many are relieved they have access to posterboards, making it easier for them to plan out their exhibits. Many of the students are excited to plan out their exhibits as they create their projects based on this year's theme of Rights and Responsibilities.

The classroom microwave has also been a great resources for myself and also my co-teacher as it is easy access to eat our lunch/breakfast on the go. As teachers we do not have a lot of time to eat as we are typically trying to grade, create lessons, and prepare for each class during our break times. Having a microwave in the classroom has made it a lot more efficient to warm up our foods and eat on the go.

Finally, the construction paper and cardstock is a great tool my students are enjoy using. This school year, we are working on a door decoration competition for the Makahiki season. The students are using the paper to help design and create elements for the door. Many of my students participating in NHD are also planning to utilize the cardstock and construction paper for their exhibit.

Overall, thank you again for the funding the project as each item has helped my students thrive in the classroom.”

  • On to the Final Stretch!

    Funded Feb 18, 2024

Mahalo for your donation! My students have loved having snacks as many of them have been skipping breakfast due to their early bus schedule and/or their commute to school. The snacks are great to have as my students feel reassured that they have some access to food. As we began our State testing, it was nice to have additional snacks as many students needed food to help them concentrate as they took a test for 2 hours.

Similarly, the pencils were very useful as many of my students come to school without school supplies. During testing, students used the pencils to help compute math equations along with brainstorming their essays. Lastly, the floor mats have been great help in keeping the classroom clean. Many of my students play football or sports so they tend to get mud/dirt stuck in their shoes. By having the floor mats, the students can clean up after themselves, maintaining the classroom and lessening the work for our janitors.

Thank you again for your support. The donations have been put to good use as many of my students benefit from having these resources in the classroom!”

  • Lights! Camera! Action!

    Funded Jan 17, 2024

Many of my students have expressed interest in learning more about media, filming, and editing videos. Due to their interest, I started a Broadcast club for students to explore presenting, filming, and editing videos that relate to our student bulletin. At first the club started with 5 students but slowly grew to 15. The videos that my students created with the camcorders have been shared throughout the school as they created weekly episodes to cover events and announcements. Students had a lot of fun capturing behind the scene moments during broadcast where they captured many bloopers. The club itself was able to succeed due to the donations and supplies gained through Donors Choose.

Most of my students were used to filming with their phones. To have an actual camera and explore the various features made it fun and exciting for them. They also enjoyed playing with lighting to see how that would affect the overall quality of the video. The ring light stand was especially helpful when filming in front of the green screen as the lighting in the classroom was not always flattering. The ring light is also going to be used as a photo booth along with the other camcorders as students capture their 8th grade memories for their banquet and graduation.

Overall, my students have truly enjoyed the opportunity to use the technology I listed above. As more students join broadcast, I envision a surplus of students gaining interest in media as a possible hobby and/or career.”

    Ms. S

  • Snack Shop Treats & Classroom Resources

    Funded Nov 19, 2023

Thank you for supporting our class with the resources listed in the project. My students are continually searching for snacks and food. By having healthier options available in class, they feel more energized! By feeling more energized, they are having an easier time focusing and completing our assignments. It is reassuring for my students to know that food is available when they need it.

The other materials such as expo markers, highlighters, pens, and sketchbooks have been great tools for the kids to use as we practice note-taking. We just started our novel study and the binders have been really helpful for the students. They are able to keep their group work organized while ensuring all their notes are safe.

Mahalo again for supporting our class. We are grateful to have these resources in our class.”

  • Key Classroom Supplies for Success!

    Funded Dec 9, 2023

Students are so excited for the snack shop treats! With the additional the treats that we received from Donors Choose, students are motivated in class to earn points, participate, and trade them for snacks. I also have extra snacks to help provide food for my students who have limited access and/or run out of time to eat. Food security has helped make my students feel comfortable and focused for our lessons. Students were also really excited to see all the variety and access to the new items.

The moving desk is working out perfectly for when I teach and the students present. They can now focus on addressing their audience rather than having their back turned. I also can engage with the students more as we do Socratic seminars/discussions about books. The fidgets are perfect for the students who need extra stimuli to help them stay on task. They are also enjoying the starfish ball, as one of my students has a need to move around and it helps them feel engaged while staying on task.

The Outsiders unit we are starting next week is going to be really exciting and fun. All students have their own copies and binders to help them organize their group work while completing assignments. Mahalo again for your support and donations!”

  • O Capitan! My Capitan! Give Writers the Ink to Write!

    Funded Oct 30, 2023

This project has enabled my students to feel successful in the classroom. A lot of my students come to school without school supplies. Items such as pencils, folders, and other resources are cause for anxiety as many students feel shy about asking for these supplies. By obtaining funding and building a class supply, all my students have access and can focus on their assignments. These supplies also help my students participate during class lectures. Some of my presentations include whiteboards for students to participate in class activities and/or partner work. By having these items in front of them, students are more willing to participate and be active learners.

The use of the printer has especially been helpful as I have been developing class flyers and signage to label items in the classroom. We are using reading groups and the printer has helped me ensure each reading group has their own folder with all the materials ready so they can complete their assignments. Many of these products have been very exciting for these students. They especially enjoy the whiteboards and dry eraser markers as it allows them to play hangman during homeroom or draw to help them focus. Thank you again donors as my students feel supported with the new items!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. S
