Support Elementary Music in the South Bronx

Funded Oct 18, 2023

These instruments have impacted the students of LAD 333X in so many ways. We have been working towards using the boomwhackers and Orff instrument in our winter concert this year and students seem genuinely excited at the opportunity to do varied music activities other than singing and movement based activities. Students are learning about music literacy and theory in tangible and measurable ways with these instruments, and they have gone a long way towards connecting solfege reading with note reading for the older grades. For the younger grades, I have been able to vary the musical activities they do in class to reinforce reading musical rhythms by using some of the non-pitched percussion that was purchased through your donations.

Most importantly, these instruments have provided structure and classroom management opportunities for me that these kids have not had in music class before. I have been able to develop a routine that involves using these instruments that students have become used to that allows for movement breaks and different stimuli. This works well as an incentive for students with ADHD or ADD as well as those that naturally have more trouble staying engaged. These students know that when I bring out instruments, we are going to have fun while also learning skills for the future as young musicians, which makes a huge difference in whether or not they will continue with music. Thank you for making this possible through your donations and support!”

With gratitude,

Mr. G
