VIPHS Gardening
Funded Feb 23, 2024I am excited to share what we have accomplished with your help! We have successfully planted native milkweed to help support our monarchs. Additionally, we have included deer-weed, which is a keystone species here in SoCal, along with CA Fuchsia for hummingbirds, and 5+ other native plants around our garden We have also included small water dishes for our insects, to help establish wildlife refuge for them.
We had a vegetable section, which included lettuce, bok choy, sweet peas, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, beets, and radishes in our raised beds. The kids had so much fun harvesting and eating them! Our strawberries, herbs, and native plants are set to hopefully hold through the summer, and give us a head start to continue next year. We have composting going to also help maintain soil nutrients in a sustainable way in the future.
For our lettuce harvests, we had a sit down lunch with school-grown salads, accompanied by soups and bread. For our carrots harvest, we brought in dips like hummus, and roasted the potatoes we grew. The students found it so fun to see the process from seed to table.
Thank you for your support in helping make learning tangible and real for students.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Winkle
