Top Two Lagging Skills: Friendship & Big Feelings
Funded May 13, 2024These tools that was given to me has been a great conversation starter for m students. During my 1:1 check-in and small group, I have read these books and used to talk about ways to deal with big feelings through mindful breathing activity, taking a break, walking away, and talking to someone who they trust. We practice these coping strategies together so we learn to pause, assess the situation, and determine the next step that is healthy for themselves and others.
Students are also learning about friendship skills by having a discussion on what it means to be a good friend vs. what it means to be a bad friend. They are also learning to handle peer conflict without resulting to unsafe behaviors including hitting and verbal harassments.”

Funded Apr 9, 2024The snacks has been instrumental with fulfilling student's basic need. Having something to munch on and satisfying their hunger, students have more capacity to talk more about their feelings and experiences without worrying about their stomach grumbling. It is also great way to engage with students any counseling sessions because many of them are food driven. I have students coming into my office feeling upset, and when I offer them a snack, their face lights up! We spend some time eating snacks and getting to know each other, and once students are feeling comfortable around me, we can dive into much deeper level of conversations about their feelings, friendships, families, etc. I very much appreciate YOU for your generosity to help students meet their basic needs and helping me cultivate the relationship with my students!”

Breaking The Cycle of Survival Mode Through Mindfulness
Funded Dec 7, 2023I distributed all the fidgets, sensory items and toys that practices mindfulness to my staff at Marysville. I see my principal using it in their office when they are talking to a student, I see these items enhancing 'peace corner' in every classroom where students are in the space to regulate their big feelings, and I see these used as a great conversation starters for students. It is amazing to see how students can quickly pick up these sensory items and figure how to best utilize them. It is as if I'm watching these students listening to what their brain needs for them to reset and return to equilibrium.
Thank you so much for your amazing contributions to this project. It has been wonderful to see the community utilizing these tools to help students disrupt their own cycle of constant survival mode.
My hope is that these tools will further help them thrive in their daily lives.”
