Do You Hear What I Hear?
Funded Dec 31, 2023At the beginning of the year, I decided to aim high in writing a request for ukuleles. I was hoping that I'd get them in time to use with my fifth graders as it is their last year in my building, and also my first year with them. I wanted to be able to connect with them, and also understood that singing in front of me, a virtual stranger, as well as their friends, just might not be in their capacity right now.
I did not actually think it would happen. I think even the website said something to the affect of this is a big ask, it might not happen.
When they finally arrived (they were backordered for some time), my students were so excited that they were going to get to use actual instruments. It has opened them up so much. Kids are playing music, having fun singing, and connecting with each other as well as with me. My school has over 20 languages spoken among our students, as well as students of varying special abilities. The ukes have my newest ELL students playing along side their peers, connecting through music before language is accessible to them. In my career, I have seen music be a unifying force, as well as a salve to the soul, which children need more than ever. Especially for these students who are facing new customs, countries, and homes, I am so very thankful that your help has brought this to them.

Bam! Slam! Boom! Into Music
