Reading Folktales: Diverse, Cultural Storytelling and Perspectives
Funded Oct 15, 2024This project provided collections of folktales from over a dozen countries! Through these books and the stories within them, my students and I have gotten the chance to explore the foundational tales of various cultures, whether that be through origin and explanation stories or lesson-based tales. With so many different stories and cultures represented, we're able to recognize what they have in common—such as themes or character archetypes—and how they're different.
As such, these books helped to shape a folktale project in my classroom that I hope to repeat every year as I develop it further. Students read different folktales and analyze the tales for details regarding purpose, theme, characters, and plot. Selecting a folktale, they plan out then draw a comic strip retelling the folktale, using the elements they identified in their analysis.
This project is still ongoing, so we haven't made it through all of the books yet! However, we're off to a great start and looking forward to seeing where this project continues to take us.”

This classroom project was brought to life by Reese's Book Club and 3 other donors.Organized and Cultural Reading
Funded Mar 25, 2024Thank you so much for donating to this project! We used the folktale books for a project where each student read three different folktales and analyzed each of them for purpose, character, plot, and setting. They then planned and executed their own project, where they either wrote a scene or drew a comic retelling the folktale of their choice. My students really enjoyed reading the various folktales from different countries/regions/nationalities, and benefited from the creative possibilities in retelling their favorites!
Additionally, the organizational supplies have a been an incredibly helpful addition to our classroom, streamlining various class procedures. Different types of work can be turned into different drawers (colored by class) on the rolling carts. Though not depicted, the library cart is used to keep students' individual curriculum workbooks, as it can easily be moved to where it needs to be each class. These items definitely have a marked, positive effect on the running of the classroom.”
