Our class is a place for students to explore their physical and creative abilities through various forms of dance. They learn a diversity of movement techniques and concepts such as the elements of dance, jazz, ballet, rhythm tap, modern, majorette, and Umfundalai. In each genre, they learn the history of the dance form as well as its social impact. They also compose in each genre, which gives them an opportunity to express their understanding in their own unique ways (confession: some of their compositions are so beautiful that they make me cry!). Overall, our students are bright, enthusiastic, charismatic, creative, thoughtful, and deep-thinking learners who aren’t always seen as such because of the communities they come from, but dance is where they are free to express this!
