Literacy and Writing Aids to Support Individual Learning Needs
Funded Jul 20, 2021Firstly, thank you for taking your time and personal resources to support such a worthy platform such as Donors Choose.
Most specifically, thank you for expressing an interest in my students and their individual learning needs.
As we all know, the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted society in various ways. For my student population, COVID-19 has created hardships additional to those that they were already facing.
These hardships range from academic, socio-emotional, medical, and financial. Being home for instruction for over 18 months, students that live in NYCHA housing did not have adequate access to electronic devises necessary for remote learning.
The Fire Tablets that you provided helped alleviate pressures families were experiences to provide technology to their children.
The tablets also provided a new interest in literacy! Many of our students are working well below grade level in literacy and as such feel discouraged to pick up a physical book. A tablet offers privacy so that their classmates can not see titles of books and derive that the student is reading significantly below grade level. This privacy gives the students a sense of being in a safe space when they read.
So, I thank you for this, wholeheartedly!”

The donation you provided allowed us to supply SWD's that were in dire need with a laptop to for their academic use.
Google Chrome provides so many educational technology "add-ons" that help to support the wide array of academic management needs of students with disabilities.
Some of the applications being used on the laptop are:
Text to speech dictation
Literacy development apps
Translation apps
and notetaking applications
Again, we appreciate the kindness that you have shown our students.”

Funded May 18, 2021Words can not even begin to express the gratitude that I have for your generous donation to my classroom.
Your donation has opened up access to the website, Teachers Pay Teachers. This website is an invaluable tool that has made available materials that meed the diverse learning needs of my students with disabilities.
Quite often, students with disabilities that have Individual Education Programs struggle with tasks such as reading and writing. These students have to work so much harder than there general education peers. The graphic organizers, learning aids, and instructional materials from Teachers Pay Teachers will make learning more accessible to my students and their needs!”

Warm Winter Weather Essentials
Funded Dec 17, 2020What a Winter we had here in NYC! Between the cold weather and family hardships caused by economic downturn, the 'Winter Weather Wear' helped our families in so many ways!
While all families have been impacted by the global pandemic in some way, shape, or form, they have had to find ways to adapt. That sometimes included my high school students chipping in to their households by getting jobs or caring for family members.
Having clothes to keep them warm while traveling to and from work or taking family members to appointments is costly and often goes by the waist side.
Thank you for your contributions. You have contributed to the warmth and wellbeing of my students and their families!

Funded Nov 17, 2020WOW, what a difference noise cancelling headphones and earbuds can make to the life of a student that is struggling to navigate online learning.
Our school is located in East Harlem, NY. The majority of our students receive free lunches and many of their families have been financially devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic. While many of our students live in public housing, they often share rooms with siblings and other family members.
As educators, what we have quickly learned is that our students' small home spaces are not always conducive to online learning.
With our school being fully remote to keep in the best interest and safety of our school community, we quickly activated to provide chrome books and the few wireless hotspots that we had on campus.
This however, did not fix the noise issues that our students struggle with. Since they don't always have a quiet space for learning, an emergency purchase of noise cancelling headphones with microphone and other technology were very necessary.
The minute the items arrived, they were dispersed to students and they began using them immediately. You have helped make a difference in making digital learning more equitable!!”

Funded Aug 12, 2020Firstly, Thank you so much for your generosity. Your gift has become an integral part of our instructional model and has been used regularly to increase student engagement and class participation.
Many of our students with disabilities are working well below grade level. Although we provide academic and sociology-emotional interventions, some of our students require additional supports to meet their academic management needs. We have found that our more tactile, visual and kinesthetic learners really appreciate the use of personal dry erase paddles. With the use of a paddle, students can draw their responses while they work to improve their expressive language. The dry erase feature is a supportive tool that reinforces the notion that mistakes are normal part of learning. Mistakes made on with pen and paper can be discouraging. The paddles decrease the stress associated with learning and in turn, increase willingness and engagement. Many of our students took their paddles home for distance and continue to use them during Zoom session in synchronous learning and related services with their speech and counseling providers.
The paddles can be very costly. Your donation has helped level the playing field for our students and we are very appreciative.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Hjemvick
