School Counseling Corner
Funded Dec 4, 2023The changes the new materials brought to my office have been so beneficial for the space in which students process sometimes challenging and difficult emotions. The inclusion of the rug and cabinet have improved the atmosphere tremendously and students were quick to comment on how much more inviting the space had become.
The Social-emotional prompt cards and games have been a big hit with most of the students. These materials have given them the opportunity to talk about emotions and other issues they often deal with in a fun and engaging way. The "building empathy" and "kindness and respect" games have been especially helpful to students to practicing these important skills. These games also led to great conversations about how we understand ourselves, make good decisions and navigate friendships. For some of the younger students the "A Little Spot of Emotion" and "A Little Spot Takes Action" books have been popular and useful for assisting them to explore and identify various emotions and how to cope with each. Reading with the students has increased their communication skills as they learn to describe how they are feeling and learn to advocate for themselves. Another activity that has been growing in interest is the origami papers and guide books. I have noticed growth in persistence, patience, and reduction of stress in students who have chosen to create origami piece; they have expressed pride at the completion of each one and are eager to show their friends and family their work.
These materials and the many others that were donated will be appreciated and used for years to come.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Silva
