This classroom project was brought to life by Young Sheldon and 2 other donors.Science Rocks!
Funded Jan 1, 2024Thank you very much for your generosity! From the project, we received a variety of different materials that transformed my students into geologists and paleontologists! The book I chose helped them learn a lot about how different rocks are found in different places and are used in different ways throughout history and in their lives now. They enjoyed all of the colorful visuals. With the remainder of the materials, I was able to create and complete two exciting hands-on activities with all of the supplies. The materials helped make this unit an extremely fun one!
For the first activity, my students took the role of geologists by looking at a set of rocks. They were so excited when I told them that I had a class set of rocks for them to look at. They kept saying that so many of the rocks were very pretty and wanted to keep them. Each student was able to look at at least three different rocks. They made observations about various properties of minerals and rocks like color, texture, luster, streak, and hardness. They loved every minute of it! It got them much more engaged and helped them better understand more difficult concepts like comparing the hardness of the mineral to other objects as well as streaks.
For the second activity, the students looked at clay models of various fossils. They made observations and determined what each fossil was using the fossil guide. They had a lot of fun looking at the different types of shells, teeth, and organisms. This activity helped them remember specific examples of fossils we can have. They're very proud of the work hanging up on the bulletin board in the hallway for the whole school to see.
My students are very thankful for your contribution, as am I. I look forward to using these materials with my students next year and for many years. My seventh graders already told their sixth-grade friends how much fun they had and my sixth graders can't wait to be seventh graders next school year and have me again so that they can work with the materials. I couldn't have done it without you! Thank you for supporting The Young Women's Leadership School of Staten Island!”
