Make Writing Fun for Bronx Teens
Funded Dec 4, 2024Thank you so much for funding our writing project. Writing is difficult for most everyone it seems but especially challenging for students new to the United States who are learning a new language and culture. To make it a bit more fun with white boards and colorful dry erase markers among other items like purple pens (to help edit their work in a color that is not red) is really helpful. These small changes help create a warmer atmosphere.
My students still have to pass the NY State English Language Arts Regents to graduate high school. While finally it has been reported that this requirement will be dismissed by fall of 2027, it is currently still a huge hurtle for students only in the U.S. for a short time. Any help getting this requirement waived for at least English Language Learners sooner would be amazing. Can we imagine our American students or ourselves in a foreign country attempting to do the same?
The games you funded also are going to make our second semester a lot of fun!”

Funded Aug 14, 2024Thank you so much for your immediate response this summer to my request for "Scholastic News" and other books that help my students understand our world. My students, who are new immigrants from Honduras, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Columbia and Senegal, are required to take the NY State ELA Regents (among others) to graduate high school.
This reading material made interesting by Scholastic helps me engage students to read and write and prepares them a bit for the unseemly task of passing a test in a new language within a year or two of arrival to the United States. While I personally hope this test will not be a requirement for graduation in the near future, Scholastic News and related books that you contributed to my classroom this year will help in teaching students to read, think and question current events.
Thank you so much!”

Funded Jan 19, 2024My students from many countries in the world can focus on a lesson because of you. Our Freshman students don't eat until 1:30 each day and having these snacks helps them engage in our 6th period class.
Also, sometimes my students don't eat breakfast and I can give them a quick snack to start their day.
Besides my English Language Learners, I also am an Advisor. We have circle discussions where we talk about life skills and how we would or would not approach different situations. We celebrate birthdays and holidays together and I am in close touch with their families during their four years of high school. I have always treated them but it is really helpful to have support in treating them! Thank you.
This has been my first year applying for anything from Donor's Choose. Both the snacks and the computers 'made' our year. And, it's been a difficult one. Thank you!”

Ms. Shaked

Funded Dec 30, 2023We opened the box of computers today. I had my students make predictions beforehand about what the box contained. We learned the word 'prediction' in the process. Nothing prepared me for the excitement of the students! They are soooo happy to have these computers to help them with their classes.
They know when they enter my room they will have easy access to the computers and also they can use in other classes. I'm going to get cases first so the computers stay nice when they travel to another classroom.
I trust my students so I will create a program so they can take the computers home with them sometimes. None of them have computers at home. The students that will get the most use out of these computers are my students who have only been in the U.S. 3 years or less. Three of my students have not been in the U.S. a year and one student only 2 months.
Thank you so much for your generosity.”

Funded Nov 4, 2023Thank you so much for funding my "Snacks for Bronx Teens". It has been so successful, I want to quickly create another request for next semester. Those snacks are almost gone even though trying to hand them out slowly! Besides my Advisory, I teach small groups of English Language Learners. I also have an Afternoon Club. I, of course, shared with all these different groups of students so the snacks went a little faster.
Just yesterday I gave out holiday 'gift bags' to my 12 Advisees. In the gift bag were some of your donations--I kept most of the Takis for the holidays as they love them so much. I am including a picture of me with one of my seniors on Culture Day. Snacks--abound!
Our kids are hungry all the time. They are teens! Our 9th grade lunch somehow is at 1:30 this year. My 9th grade English Language learners thank you--we had 'appetizers' of your snacks at 1. We were hoping the entire school would have snacks at some point for the 9th graders because this lunch it too late but so far we don't have that luxury. Your 'snacks' helped sooooo much.”
