Exploring the Classics Through Graphic Novels
Funded Aug 13, 2024Thank you so much for donating to this project! My students have been loving reading the graphic novels! They love using the images to infer what is happening before we read the text, and they are doing such a great job with comprehension. The Odyssey is a really tough text for even our highest-skilled learners, and I am continually so impressed by my students and how well they are doing.
Some of my students shared that they like The Odyssey because it shows characters who are "cool", "strong" and "epic" while others shared that they really love the drawings of Penelope because she is "beautiful" and "smart".
Reading in my classroom looks a lot different than your average freshman class, but by using the graphic novels, my students are still gaining such valuable knowledge and learning experiences. Your kindness in supporting our vision with these graphic novels is so very appreciated.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Diana
A Classroom Should Be Comforting
Funded Sep 14, 2023Thank you SO much for your generous donations. The headphones that we received have helped my students be able to watch videos assigned to them for classwork without disturbing others, and some students have used them to listen to music while completing independent work. They were so excited to have brand new headphones available that they could just plug into their computers since our school has a strict policy about airpods and phones during class.
The snacks provided to our classroom have also been a huge hit - teenagers are ALWAYS hungry, and many of my students come from food insecure homes, so being able to offer them a snack has allowed my students to focus on their work instead of how hungry they are. The fidget toys have been a huge help too, as many of my students have executive function weaknesses and can't always sustain their attention for long periods of time. The fidgets allow them to quietly redirect themselves and stay engaged in their work.
We are currently working on a self-reflection project as we take a look at how we have grown since the first day of school. Our next project is planning a vacation with a set budget so that they learn how to plan ahead and budget their money! Thank you again for your donations, my students and I truly appreciate it!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Diana
