Sensory Speech Room for Neurodivergent Learners

I am so grateful to have been selected to receive $1000 in funds from CDE. When my students saw the new materials, they were thrilled to learn we could learn through play and exploring five senses instead of rote drill exercises. Since many of my students are low socioeconomic status, our garden has allowed them to grow herbs they have never tasted before. Many of the games are new to my students, and they were so excited about all of the materials, we have designated lesson plans around each game or toy for each week.

The materials collected have also allowed my students to expand their vocabulary, practice their speech sounds in the mirror for visual cues, develop social skills, and follow directions. Speech mirrors and the play mouth have allowed many of my students with /l/ and /r/ errors to see their tongue placement and self-correct for increased independence in speech. My model mouth has allowed my students to explore new tactile cues for speech sounds. I can't thank you enough for supporting my students in my first-ever speech room.”
