I am a first grade teacher in an urban public school in Illinois. Most of the students are eager to learn and enjoy challenging and engaging assignments as a result the math and reading scores improved last school year. The school is situated in a high poverty, gang infested neighborhood. Approximately 95 percent of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Fifteen percent of our students are homeless and several families reside in a shelter a few blocks from the school. We promote a culture of caring by providing breakfast and lunch for our students. Those staying for afterschool programs receive a snack. Most staff members spend their own money on school supplies to ensure that our students are equipped for learning. Most students are resilient and do their best regardless.
