  • Sit on It! Story Seats

    Funded Aug 30, 2024

Thank you so much for funding our Sit on It! Story Seats project. Through your generosity, I was able to purchase 24 adorable round mats for students to sit on during our story share. Each mat has a number and a tree stump, and around the tree stump is something living from the forest in the amount of the number. For example, the number 1 seat has one racoon on it; the number 11 seat has eleven monarch butterflies on it.

The students were delighted when they first saw the seats and have been fascinated by the living things represented on them. Once they learned that the living thing was in the same number as the mat, they practice their counting skills while waiting for class to start. They have also been helping each other learn some of the double digit numbers especially the twenties. And they love the flexibility of the seats, some of them a little too much as they sometimes prefer rearranging their mat to listening.

The mats have been useful for regrouping; in addition to using them for story time, we've been able to use them for lessons at the SmartBoard. The mats have been very useful in helping the children learn about personal space; they have given us bonus lessons in counting, number recognition, and the natural world. Thank you for making all of this possible.”

  • Game On at the Library

    Funded May 7, 2024

This year I have been tasked with hosting students for over 90 minutes in the library. Our usual lessons last 45 minutes, so it has been a great benefit to have these games and puzzles available. I utilize the "play" time to help develop students' social skills but also handling emotions such as frustration and anger if they don't win.

They are also developing teamwork and problem solving skills, especially in building the puzzles. They work together to figure out where the pieces go, but they also learn compassion and how to share by giving up a piece to let a classmate put it in the puzzle. It has been wonderful watching the students develop their camaraderie.

Of special note, the games are helping some of our special needs students develop their socialization skills. Several students who I normally don't see interacting with their peers are more than willing to play a game or build a puzzle with their classmates. I am very thankful to you for providing me the support to help my students develop socialization skills.”

  • Make the MakerSpace Orderly!

    Funded May 7, 2024

Our students love how much the containers have made cleaning up the MakerSpace a breeze. The students can quickly and easily locate which activities they are seeking and are much better able to keep track of the materials in their containers.

I have found the hanging "curtains" helpful in directing the students to the activities I want them to access for that day. And the containers allow me to display the different activities much more clearly for the students to identify.

Thanks to your generosity, our MakerSpace has become better functioning and therefore much more fun for both the students and adults utilizing the materials. Thank you so much for caring.”

  • Exploring Our World Through Digital Storytelling

    Funded Jan 23, 2024

Through your generous donations, my second grade students truly did explore their world through digital storytelling. The excitement in the air was palpable as we began the project and the students started filming. Their eyes widened as the saw the "magic" of the green screen at work with themselves superimposed over their chosen images.

In social studies the students were learning about human, natural, and capital resources, so they utilized the green screen to create backdrop images of these different resources while they recorded themselves explaining what each was. The Fudesy Green Screen and Rode VideoMic allowed these second graders to creatively deepen their knowledge of our three main resources.

The students worked collaboratively as they learned how to overlay their recorded green screen videos with their images. Every single student was engaged in the project and exuberantly so. Even the student who has been disengaged in our lessons and disruptive in his behavior over the past month was excitedly working on his resources video. When I showed him how to add a soundtrack and sound effects to his completed video, his creativity elevated again. The only frustration any students exhibited were the ones who had to wait to film their videos. Luckily, the teacher gave us extra time to work in the library.

At the end one student was so overcome by the excitement of the project and getting to create a video, she impulsively hugged me. Your generosity has allowed these student to learn about green screen technology and creating videos while also deepening their understanding of our resources. Thank you for your support of my students.”

  • Help Make the MakerSpace!

    Funded Nov 29, 2023

Our students love the MakerSpace! Nearly every time the students see me in the hallway or come to the library for classes, they ask about going into the MakerSpace. Their inquisitive and curious attitude coupled with developing patience has been a joy to witness. And the pride the students feel in their creations is immeasurable.

The students are already beginning to understand more about balance and counterweight using the Keva blocks. And the 5th graders have a much better understanding of electrical circuits thanks to the Playz Circuit Fun. The younger students explore their creativity as well as problem solving and reading as they work to follow directions to build with the Kaplan Build an Animal, Plus Plus, and Brain Flakes. And all the grade levels love the opportunity to create with the Legos.

So I am very grateful for your generous support of our students and their creative learning.”

  • Dragon Books Drop Off!

    Funded Nov 28, 2023

Thanks to your generosity, our students are utilizing the book drops to return their library books consistently. Because of the convenience and visibility of the book drops, students are finding and returning books that have been out for months and, in a few cases, years! The students have been excited for the book drops ever since they learned about them, and they love the ease of returning their books without a special trip to the library. To promote the book drops, we ran a "commercial" during the morning news show that included a recording of kids cheering. The students loved it so much that they use the same "Hooray, yay" cheer when they drop their books in the return. Both myself and my media assistant appreciate how using the book drops before classes come to the library allows us to focus on the students when they do arrive for class and not have to try and collect books. Now that we have these book returns, I hope to expand library usage by the lower grades at the beginning of the school year and keep the older grades checking out books even though they no longer visit the library for a resource class. The Dragons Book Drop Off has been a huge success at my school.”
