I have done the SLAM project for a two years in my classes. For the project: kids choose a book from the Sunshine State Young Readers Award list, read the book, and then complete a project of their choosing- a video, 2D, or 3D artwork inspired by the book. They have the opportunity to attend the county showcase, meet the author, and mingle with other competitors. The only downfall is the school cannot afford to buy enough books for every student to checkout their book of choice. But, that’s where you come in! Your donation will allow multiple students to read their book of choice. Additionally, it will allow students to work with a small group on their videos. You can help create life-long readers! Kids who read earn significantly better on standardized tests, and in the words of Mason Cooley, “Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are.”
