Anyone who walks into our classroom immediately marvels at how relaxing and beautiful it is. Other scholars tell my class that we are lucky. Teachers from other rooms bring their struggling scholars to my calming corner. You have truly helped us create an oasis, and we are so grateful! Every day after lunch, scholars come into the room, get cozy, and listen to a read aloud. We are currently reading Winn Dixie in Spanish and English. Students are developing a love for written stories, and engaging with the text more each day.”
This initiative has worked out better than I ever expected. Several teachers followed suit, and now every third grader at PS 38 has access to cool drinking water! We are so grateful!
Students come in the morning, and take their water bottle to the filling station. The ice maker works fast, supplying enough ice for everyone. Several students ask for ice again after recess or P. E.
Scholars love knowing that they can take a sip of cool water whenever they need, and they have said many times how lucky they feel!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Shera

I began the 2023-2024 wanting to create a sanctuary for my students, especially those who have special needs, and/or those who have survived trauma at such an early age. Little did I know that my new school was amidst an overwhelming influx of migrant students who were new to the country, several who had traveled on foot for months to make it to safety. It took months to establish classroom norms, as many of our students had either never been to school, or hadn't been to school in a long time. The item that gets the most use by far is our Alexa owl!we have set it to give us gentle verbal reminders for transitions (ie, this is your reminder that it's time to get ready for math), which has been a great alternative to timers or bells that triggered some of our more sensitive students. We also use Alexa to play soft music during independent work. The lamps have made it so that we can at times turn off the overhead lights when students need to decompress, but still be able to see what we need to. The calming corner that we were able to create has been a source of comfort for many students who just need a moment to collect themselves. Students and teachers alike comment on how relaxing and peaceful our classroom environment is, and we could not have created that environment without your generosity.”
