  • Empowering Readers, One Book at a Time!

    Funded Dec 31, 2024

Thank you so much for your generous donation to this project. My students love to read, and these resources have really helped to freshen up my selection of books. My two students who had specifically requested a couple of these books were elated when the packages arrived. They immediately wanted to help me label them so they could check them out. The 3-in-1 Naruto book quickly became the most highly coveted book in my library! Many of the girls in my class have really gotten into the Litter Sisters Babysitters Club series, and others were happy to get to read the next few books in the original Babysitters Club series.

The choose your own adventure books are also a big hit. We read a couple as a class just so the students could get to know how they work, and now not a day goes by where they do not ask me to read another one with them!

We have also been using the googly eye pointer fingers a lot in both whole group and small group lessons and the students love them. They keep them focused and engaged while they read, and they encourage them to track the text with their finger.

I am so grateful for your generosity in fully funding this project. Instilling a love of reading in my students is so important to their academic growth. These nice new books have helped me to continue to do that. Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Robertson

  • Small Groups = Big Math Wins

    Funded Dec 31, 2024

Thank you so much for your generous donation to our classroom. We have already gotten so much use out of the materials. The folders have been keeping all the students organized, and they have facilitated prepping independent work so every student receives work that challenges them appropriately. My students have also been loving the multiplication card game. It has become a fan-favorite at the hands-on station. I cannot wait to introduce the fraction war game when we begin working with fractions next month. The mathelogical liar game is another big hit. A few of my students love it so much they choose to play it together during their recess time!

The student privacy folders are also a great addition to our classroom. I use them for tests, and I encourage students to grab them when working at their desk so they can remain focused. I have even had a couple of teachers stop in and ask where they are from.

These materials have seriously made a huge difference in our classroom this year. My students and I are extremely appreciative of your generosity in making this happen!”

    Ms. Robertson

  • Illustrating Inclusion Through Diverse Graphic Novels

    Funded Oct 19, 2024

Thank you so much for donating to this project. My students love to read and had started to run out of high-interest books from my classroom library before this project was funded. When they saw the big box come up to our classroom, they became extremely excited and couldn't wait to take out a brand new book! The fact that these books represent a wide variety of experiences and characters is an added bonus, which I believe helps all my students to feel represented within the walls of our classroom.

On the day the books came, I had each of my students take a book interest survey which asked them questions about which types of books they enjoy reading. I then used the results to give them a few suggestions of books that fit their interests. Many of the books they ultimately selected came from this project. My student who had just finished The Babysitters Club series couldn't wait to read The Awakening Storm, and my boys' faces immediately lit up when they saw the two Miles Morales Spiderman books. Lots of students chose to read their new books for recess that day and many students even asked if they could take their books home to read over the weekend!

Having these high-interest books that also represent my students' experiences and cultures has been a game-changer in my classroom. Through your generosity and the generosity of other donors on Donors Choose from some of our classroom's previous projects, I have had the opportunity to develop a classroom library that excites my students and makes them feel welcomed. I even have students from other classrooms that want to take out a book! Thank you so much for your commitment to providing students with resources that help to foster a love of reading a learning! My class and I are extremely appreciative of you and we will be thinking of your generosity each time we take out a new book.”

  • Math in Motion: Hands-On Centers

    Funded May 7, 2024

Thank you so much for your generous donation to our classroom. Students participate in math center rotations each day during our WIN block. During this time, I am able to take students in small groups to address more specific needs in terms of accessing our fourth grade math curriculum. Before having this project funded, I struggled to provide the students I was not meeting with during that day with an engaging and meaningful opportunity to practice and enhance their math skills. These materials have helped me to do that.

My students love the Math in a Can sets! Each can contains all the materials they need to practice a specific skill (manipulatives, dry erase markers, task cards, instructions, and answer keys). They facilitate my ability to create meaningful centers for the "hands-on" math rotation. Each can is labeled with the skill which makes it easy to find and put out during centers time. For example, when learning about angles at the end of last school year, I was able to easily put the angles Math in a Can in our "hands-on" space and students at that center were able to use the shape cards, protractors, task cards, and white boards to work on measuring angles and classifying shapes based on their measurements. Everything they needed to do this was right in the can, and they loved having the independence to practice on their own and check their own work.

The Bridging the Gap resource has also been a great addition to our classroom. I can easily work on remediating learning gaps by using the cards to review the third grade skills connected to the fourth grade skill students are struggling with.

These materials have made my students more independent learners and they have made it easier for me to really focus on specific learning struggles with small group during our math rotations. They have helped to maximize our learning time during WIN rotations. Thank you for you generosity in making this possible with your donation!”

  • Resources for Reading Rotations: Empowering Comprehension, Fluency and Language Proficiency

    Funded May 2, 2024

Thank you so much for your donation to this project. These resources have really helped to enhance our small group literacy time. Students participate in small group literacy rotations each day, and while I am meeting with a group of students to work on remediating specific struggles accessing fourth grade level materials, it is important for the other students to have differentiated and engaging activities to complete in order to strengthen their literacy skills independently during this time. These materials have helped me to to do that. Students really enjoy taking responsibility for their learning by using the fluency passages. They love getting to pair up to test their words per minute, and they also love getting to see their progress as they practice by using the tracker cards. This resource is also great because it is leveled, so even students who are not on grade level can find a passage that challenges them just the right amount.

The ELL resource kit has also been extremely helpful. I have used this to help increase language proficiency with my newcomer students. These types of materials can be hard to come by within our curriculum resources, so having additional materials to supplement them has been extremely helpful.

These resources have helped me to meet my students where they are academically and I am so grateful for your generosity which has helped make having them in our classroom a possibility.”

  • Cozy Conversations: A Spacious Rug for Read Alouds and SEL

    Funded May 17, 2024

Thank you so much for your donation to our classroom. This carpet has brightened up our room, created a comfortable environment for my students, and increased engagement in whole group lessons across all subject areas. It is a great place to gather my students without distractions. Using this space for whole group lessons has also helped facilitate group work and the use of manipulatives. It is also a great place to have important class discussions during our SEL block.

Students are always asking to sit on the carpet, especially during independent work time. They find that it is a comfortable space where they have the room they need to engage with our class materials. When students walked into the room on the first day, I could tell they felt like it was a safe, and comfortable space. I even had students from my class last year visit and tell me how jealous they were of my updated classroom having a bright and spacious carpet that can fit the whole class comfortably.

Your donation to our classroom is so appreciated by my students and me. We use the carpet every day and I cannot imagine our classroom without it. We will ensure to use the carpet gently and responsibly so that it can continue to be a comfortable space for my fourth graders for years to come.”

  • New Year Classroom Refresh

    Funded Feb 3, 2024

Thank you so much for your donation to our classroom. The materials included in this project have really helped us to revitalize our classroom for the second half of the year. The pencils, markers, colored pencils, and paper are used almost daily. The tissues, wipes, disinfectant spray, and hand sanitizer have helped us to stay heathy and keep our space clean.

A couple of our favorite items are the floor cushions and the pencil sharpener. The students love having a flexible seating option for math and reading rotations, and the bright colors of the cushions help to liven up our space. The students and I also really love our new pencil sharpener. The old one that we started the year with had broken right before receiving funding for this project. The new one that we got quickly sharpens the pencil to a perfect point. The students call it the robot sharpener, and they love using it! I love it too because it is easy to use and sharpens the pencil quickly, limiting the amount of distractions from pencil sharpening during lesson.

I have also loved using our dry erase boards. These are now part of our daily math lessons as well as our small group rotations. Students love the interaction of using the whiteboards, and it makes trying math problems less intimidating because they can easily erase their work if they discover a mistake. The pink cart where we store them makes it easy to distribute the boards and markers during math class.

Your support of this project is very much appreciated by my students and me. You have really made a difference in my students' education and we are so grateful for your generosity!”

  • Time for Kids to Start Reading Non-Fiction Texts

    Funded Dec 5, 2023

Thank you so much for donating to our classroom this year. The Time for Kids magazines have been a fantastic addition to our literacy small group rotations. Having access to various genres of text is so important for developing good literacy skills. I have used the Time for Kids magazines in numerous ways to supplement our curriculum. One way I have used it is making it an option for small group rotations. Students have an independent reading station each day where they can either choose to read a book from the classroom library or they can look at one of the magazines. Students have access to both hard copies and an online version. The online version allows students to switch articles to their native language and change the Lexile level so they can read it independently.

I have also used the magazines for social studies lessons. Since we do not have a Social Studies curriculum, it can be difficult to find engaging materials to support our learning goals. These magazines have been a great option for our Social Studies block. The online subscription also gives me access to lessons and worksheets for the cover article.

The magazines were a great resource for my students' recent option article. I had them writing biographies about people in pop culture and two of the options were Messi and Taylor Swift. Conveniently, two of the Time for Kids articles that just came out featured those two people, and were a great resource for finding information on them.

I am eager to continue using the articles with my class this year. They love being able to read it online and change the level and language. They also look forward to seeing what each issue will be about. The magazines are a great option for small group rotations and it gives them a chance to practice reading a different genre of text. Thank you so much for bringing this project to life!”

  • Picture Yourself in Our Classroom Library

    Funded Dec 6, 2023

Thank you for your generosity in donating to our class project. These books have really helped to liven up our classroom. Each time I added one of these new books to our collection, my students' eyes lit up and they began begging for more read alouds! Many students took these books out and read them during independent reading time. I have also used many of these books already as mentor texts for the reading and writing skills we have been studying. For example, "Skater Cielo" was a great text to study during our realistic fiction writing unit where the students were tasked with writing a story about a character who overcomes a fear. We also used many of these new books as a way to explore Black history during Black History Month. I was even able to loan some of them out when the school organized a Black History read aloud day, so students throughout the school benefited from your generosity!

I have received a few new students in the time between when I received my materials and now. These students are newcomers who don't speak much English, so being able to offer them books that reflect their culture, language, and experiences helped to make them feel more at home in an unfamiliar environment.

It is so important for students to see themselves within the walls of their classroom. I am so glad that these books reflect the varied cultures and experiences of my students. I will continue to use these books to teach empathy, community, and a love of individuality both this year and for years to come. Thank you for making this possible.”
