  • Students Enjoy Learning More From One Other

    Funded May 10, 2024

We recently completed a unit on animal adaptations and genetics. Our culminating project was to create butterflies that would camouflage in with the classroom environment. Administration from within our building then came around at the end of the day and "hunted" out the butterflies. Any butterflies not found, those that remained hidden due to their adaptive patterning, won their student a prize.

We used markers, card stock, rulers, arm grease, scissors, and a whole lot of outside the box thinking to make this work. Ultimately, the solid black butterflies that blended in with the floor molding, and a very well-measured to match with the stripes on the flag butterfly were the winners.

It was awesome to see the friendly competition and encouragement amongst the students. Thank you for being a part of it.”

  • A Fresh Start for the New Year

    Funded Feb 16, 2025

Thank you for your giving Spirit and willingness to support students in East TN. Whether it's grabbing a pencil to take more, a glue stick to add to their notebook, a drink, or a snack, it's truly the smallest or most basic things that make all the difference. I'm most grateful for you!”

  • Glue and Notes to Make It Stick

    Funded Sep 16, 2024

I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude for your generous financial support of our classroom. Your contribution has made a significant impact, and thanks to your kindness, we now have essential supplies like Post-it notes for students to share their ideas and glue sticks to keep their work together. Watching the students trade Post-it ideas and glue them down shows at minimum a willingness to work together. The words written, however, show they've mastered the lesson.

These materials are more than just tools; they enable creativity, collaboration, and organization in the classroom, all of which are invaluable for the students' learning experience. We are truly fortunate to have your support, and I cannot thank you enough for helping make our classroom a better place for learning.”

  • Experiment, Experiment, Explode!

    Funded Feb 13, 2024

Students were able to use various Scientific measuring tools (beakers, scales, etc.) to find volumes and masses of the matter needed to create chemical changes from everyday items.

Using baking soda in a balloon and vinegar in an empty water bottle, students were able to see what would happen when the baking soda was dropped from the balloon into the bottle of vinegar. The mixture not only created a foaming, but also Carbon Dioxide gas.

The Carbon Dioxide formed and released inflated the balloon. What students were able to experience first-hand was The Law of Conservation of Mass - Matter can be neither created nor destroyed. We took a solid and a liquid, mixed them to create a gas, but the new gas and liquid still total the same amount of matter. The mass of that matter did NOT change. They were shocked! And it was that shocking discovery that they will remember! Thank you for being a part of it!”

  • Storage for Supplies

    Funded Sep 6, 2023

Thank you for your support in helping the Science classroom to have some storage options this year for organization of supplies that students use on a regular basis.

Because of your generous support, students in each class period have dedicated bins in which they can store their interactive notebooks. They have individual baskets for turning in completed work that is ready for grading. And just as, if not most importantly, there is a specific cabinet that is used for storage of Science supplies (such as rulers, test tubes, string, petri dishes, etc.) so that for every unit we cover in class, we can have the opportunity to complete hands-on learning experiences.

For every module covered in class, we have lectures, informational text, research in small groups, and then hands-on practical experiments/activities that allow students to put into practice what they've learned, or test out their theories. Thank you for making this a reality.”

  • Warmth, Food, Comfort - Learn!

    Funded Dec 6, 2023

One of the toughest parts of teaching at a low-income school is seeing students arrive in the morning and go home at the end of the day knowing they are or will be hungry or cold.

Your donations to this project have helped to provide hand warmers for the bus stops, small snacks that can be kept in back packs, and sanitary items that can be kept on hand for use at school or handed out to students to be taken home at night when necessary.

Students are able to learn better when they are not worrying about the basics of daily living. Thanks to you, a couple more of these concerns have been alleviated.”

  • Tissues and Organs and Mammals - Dissect!

    Funded Dec 4, 2023

Seventh grade in the State of Tennessee is a year full of Physical and Life Sciences. Beginning with the Periodic Table of the Elements, moving into Physical and Chemical Changes, and eventually going into living organisms, the goal is to help students understand how everything is made of matter, and matter makes up everything - even us!

From cells, to tissue, to organs, organ systems, and eventually organisms, the interesting things for students to explore is how all of this plays a part in their own lives. A pig is similar to a human when it comes to organs, and so while we learned about several different organisms at various levels, students loved being able to hold onto a pig's heart!

How many chambers does a heart have? How are the ventricles and atrium arranged? How are the arteries and veins different? And what is actually similar about them? Being able to cut into these hearts and see them open, allowed students to better understand the function of their own hearts and the Cardiac/Circulatory System.”
